About Kokodoko Design
My name is Sofie and I live in the countryside between Jönköping and Tenhult with my husband and our three children. For almost six years I have run Kokodoko Design AB – a company that grew out of my passion for sewing, design and creating something with my hands.
My love of sewing runs deep. When I was little, my grandmother made many of the dresses in my closet. I remember sneaking up the stairs and browsing through the fabrics in her fabric rack, feeling the materials and admiring how she transformed fabric into something alive, something that suited me.
But it wouldn't be until I was expecting twins myself before I took the step to start sewing. It started out simple, with a baby nest, a diaper bag and small pacifiers. Nothing was perfect. Seams bubbled, twin seams burst after washing. But I learned. Every failed garment became a lesson, and pretty soon I was sewing clothes that not only lasted better, they fit perfectly. Because I could adapt them to the children's needs and wishes.
That's exactly what I want to pass on to you.
"I want you to feel confident enough to try something you've never done before."
What I love most about sewing is the freedom. That I can start with an idea, and choose the fabric, shape, color and fit myself. To create something from scratch, that feels just right for me. I want you to feel that freedom when you use a pattern from Kokodoko Design.
That's why clear pattern sheets and an educational step-by-step description are included, with both text and images in each pattern. You don't need any prior knowledge. Just the curiosity to try.
Because I promise you, you can.
What does Kokodoko mean?
Kokodoko Design was born from my love for Japan, a country that has always fascinated me with its aesthetics, its craft traditions and its unique design language. When I first dreamed of starting a creative company, the idea was to create fabrics with Japanese-inspired patterns. The name Kokodoko is a playful combination of the Japanese words koko (here) and doko (where) – and means roughly "Where are we?" . It is an expression I associate with curiosity, a desire to discover and daring to venture out on new paths, something that is perfect for a creative journey.
Over time, the company grew in a different direction. The fabrics remained, but it was the patterns that captured my heart, and the interest of others. Today, Kokodoko Design is primarily a pattern company, but the Japanese heritage and the sense of daring to explore something new still lives on in every stitch, every idea and every design decision.
