How to sew your own bow beanie

Beanies are a garment that I often sew. It is easy to sew and goes quickly but sometimes I feel like it is fun to have something more than a regular beanie. One detail that I love to do that looks a little more worked is to decorate the beanie with a bow. This is how you sew such a lovely spring beanie. All you need is knit fabric such as single jersey.

1. Cut out all the parts

In addition to cutting out the beanie, I cut out two more parts. The width of the bow is the same as the beanie, while the height depends on what effect you want the bow to have. Remember to cut out double the height of the bow compared to what you want the final height to be at the edges.

2. Fold the rectangular pieces in half

Start by folding the large rectangular part. This part will become the bow. Fold it in half, long side to long side and pin.

Fold the small part as well. This will then become the ribbon on the bow. This should also be folded long side to long side and pinned. Note, however, that the pattern on the fabric is on different joints. Sew both parts.

3. Turn the pieces inside out & iron them

When both parts are sewn, it is time to turn the parts inside out so that the right side is facing out.

Now that both parts are sewn, we will iron them. Make sure that the seams are exactly in the middle on the back so that the seam is hidden in the best way later.

4. Assemble the bow

Place the middle part of the ribbon directly under the part that will become the bow. Be careful how you place the middle part so that it is facing the right way up when you have turned the pieces inside out.

Fold the bow into an accordion shape in the center of the bow. Fold the center band of the bow so that right sides meet right sides. Pin and sew as close to the bow as you can without accidentally sewing into the bow.

This is what it should look like before you sew the center ribbon of the bow.

Cut off the remaining fabric from the bow.

Now that it's cut, it's finally time to flip the middle section.

Now the bow is finished and ready to be sewn to the hat.

5. Prepare the beanie

Fold the beanie and mark where the center of the beanie will be, on both sides.

Fold the beanie to the middle so you can clearly see how big the beanie will be. Now it's time to place the bow.

Pin the bow onto the beanie, in a position that you think is appropriate. Remember to leave a little margin towards the middle, because that's where the beanie will be folded later. Otherwise, place it according to your taste.

Fold back the top of the beanie and pin everything together. Then we'll sew the beanie together.

6. Cut a wedge

When the beanie is sewn, it should now be folded both along the height and width. Now only a quarter of the beanie is visible. Now it is time to cut a triangle from the top of the beanie. This will create a V on both the top and bottom of the beanie.

This is what it should look like when both the top and bottom of the beanie are finished. Now it's time to turn the beanie inside out.

7. Sew the gussets

Make sure the pattern is upside down. This is the inside of the beanie. Now match up side seam to side seam of the triangle with all layers (4 layers). Pin along the entire rounding.

Now it's time to sew.

This is what the inside should look like now. If you are sewing on an overlock machine like I am, it is time to fasten the seams.

Turn the beanie inside out again. Now your bow beanie is finished.
